Online learning is no longer a new concept in many organisations, but may of us still struggle to find ways to effectively stay motivated with our learning, often starting off strong but losing traction along the way as work requirements slowly take over.
Below are 5 tips that we have found make a significant difference to staying motivated with online courses.
1. Set A Schedule
- It may seem obvious, but having designated time allocated in each day to online learning means that you will be able to have dedicated focus time, and will not be trying to squeeze learning in to random gaps in your work day, which can lead to frustration if you are only getting 10 minutes of learning done at a time, and constantly needing to re-view what you went over previously because you couldn’t give the learning your full attention.
2. Learn When You Have Energy
- Don’t try to learn in the part of the day when you have your energy slump, and don’t want to do work. Rather learn when you have high energy levels. This will help you move through the work faster, and retain more information. It will also make learning a more positive experience instead of being associated with being tired. Rather do something relaxing or something that requires minimal concentration (no better time to update your files) when you have energy slump.
3. Apply Your Learning Immediately
- Few things make us lose motivation faster than not being able to see how what we are learning is applicable to our day-to-day work. After you have completed a lesson or course, take time to go through what was covered on your own and make sure that it makes sense to you, and see how you can apply it. Even if it is as simple as quickly adjusting profile settings after reviewing how to do so, it will make the knowledge practical in no time, and allow you to think out of the box as you become more and more proficient.
4. Set Targets
- Don’t start a course without an end date in mind. Just as it is important to have time scheduled in your calendar for learning, it is also important to set yourself study targets to achieve. Without set targets and dates, learning risks being an ongoing process than never quite gets done, and becomes something constantly hanging over our heads, instead of a vibrant growth experience.
5. Reward Yourself
- Now that you have your targets set, you should reward yourself for achieving them! You can even reward yourself with your favourite coffee while you do your learning in your scheduled time. Staying self-motivated with online learning can be difficult, and there is no reason not to reward yourself for achieving results.
